For 20 years, Winks Eatery has been more than just a place to grab a drink—it’s been a hub where the Richmond Row neighbourhood comes together.

“We bring a clean, safe place downtown that everyone can call a home,” said owner Adam Winkler, reflecting on two decades of service.

Born and raised in London, Winkler said the secret to Winks’ longevity isn’t really a secret at all.

“It is the hardest thing I have done in my life, and a lot of restaurateurs will tell you that too, especially nowadays with the cost of food and the cost of just everything skyrocketing. Everybody sees it in their own pocket, and it affects us just as much,” he said.

Winkler credits most of the pub’s success to his team.

“I still have three staff that have been with me since day one, 20 years ago. If it wasn’t for them, we would be nothing.”

The pub has hosted countless memories over the years, from eating competitions and St. Patrick’s Day celebrations to drag brunches, Tuesday rock n’ roll bingo nights and even a wedding that began with a meet-cute. Winkler, a romantic at heart, says one of his favourite aspects of owning a bar is providing a space for people to connect.

“I love hearing about when people meet here, and even get married,” he said. “It makes it all worthwhile when you can help spread the gift of love.”

To mark the milestone, the pub is offering 20 per cent off and bringing back old favourites from their original menu, including Kraft Dinner—where you can barter for the price—and the special steak sandwich. Tomorrow’s celebrations include an open mic night and reservations are already full from 5-8 p.m.

“When you come to Winks, you’re not supporting the big corporations,” Winkler said. “You’re helping the little guy.”
