HAYLEY TUBRETT – The National Basketball Association suspended its regular season Wednesday night after a player with the Utah Jazz tested positive for coronavirus.
League sources said the positive result came back for centre Rudy Gobert just before he was set to play in the game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The league cancelled the game and suspended regular season play.
Gobert’s teammate, Donovan Mitchell, has also tested positive for COVID-19, according the the team.
The NBA is working with the Center for Disease Control and Oklahoma and Utah State officials to closely monitor the players’ health and determining the best move forward. No games are expected to be played in the near future.
“The safety of our players, staff, fans and media, is our primary concern at this time,” said Carla Rawson, an NBA spokesperson.
“We believe this decision comes at a paramount time, where we will be seeing major changes across multiple sports and leagues in the coming months,” she said.
The New Orleans Pelicans vs. the Sacramento Kings game last night was also cancelled out of concern for coronavirus exposure.
The Toronto Raptors are currently being tested after the Monday game against the Utah Jazz. Players are still awaiting results, but all players have been sanctioned to self-isolation for the next 14 days.
